University Honors SMHS Teacher Praised by Former Student

Lisa Davidson

Lisa Davidson, an English teacher at San Marino High School, has received an Outstanding Educator Award from the University of Chicago. Davidson was nominated by Kourosh Hassibi, who graduated from SMHS this summer and is a freshman at the university.
“Each year, newly admitted University of Chicago students have the opportunity to reflect on their time in school and nominate an educator who played a significant role in their education, made a positive impact in their lives, and whose influence has brought them to where they are today,” said a statement from the university.

Davidson received a plaque, a sweatshirt and a gift card redeemable for school supplies from the university in commemoration of the award.
“But the honor, of course, far outweighs the material items I received,” Davidson said. “How incredibly thoughtful of a former student to think about honoring me as he begins the next step on his educational journey.”
Hassibi was a student in Davidson’s Advanced Placement English language and composition class as a junior, but her influence lasted much longer.
“Mrs. Davidson’s class challenged me to grow and mature both as a student and as a person in general,” said Hassibi, who is attending classes in person at Chicago. “Mrs. Davidson is always honest with her students and truly wants them to succeed in her class and beyond. She was enthusiastic and engaging every single day. It was truly a privilege to be in her class and I will always cherish her as one of my favorite teachers at San Marino High School.”
Hassibi previously honored Davidson at halftime of a Titan football game where senior team members are asked to single out an educator who has affected them in a positive manner.
“Kourosh’s growth was exponential and we connected on many levels,” recalled Davidson. “I’m honored to have been his teacher and been able to contribute to the education of a bright young man of excellent character.”
Davidson has taught in the San Marino Unified School District since 2006, instructing all levels of English. She is currently co-chair of the English department and sits on the Senior Advisory Board. Over the last six years, she has also chaired or co-chaired the Western Association of Schools and Colleges accreditation effort for SMHS. The mother of two sons, Davidson lives in La Cañada Flintridge, is an avid sailor and enjoys traveling, playing bridge and hiking.
“The University of Chicago is honored to recognize excellence in teaching and sincerely congratulates this year’s Outstanding Educator Award winners, who are exceptional in their field and role models for all students,” the release concluded.
