Suspect Under Arrest in Alleged Kidnapping, Chase

A Santa Clarita man remained in custody this week after the Glendale Police Department said he kidnapped a woman, led officers on a high-speed chase around downtown and ultimately crashed into other vehicles on Wednesday.
The GPD said it expects the 28-year-old suspect to be charged with kidnapping, felony assault, assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer and violating the terms of his parole. He was in custody awaiting arraignment, according to Sgt. Christian Hauptmann.
Police received three calls at around 5:15 p.m. Wednesday, the first presumably from the alleged victim — all the dispatcher heard was “an active struggle” between a man and a woman before the call ended, a department news release said. The second call came from another person reporting that a man was attacking a woman outdoors near the intersection of Harvard Street and Chevy Chase Drive.

A third call came again from the alleged victim, during which she “began screaming hysterically” as the confrontation continued, according to police.
When officers arrived, Hauptmann said, they found the woman seated in a sedan and the suspect leaning into the car talking to her. When the officers positioned their Ford Explorer units to impede escape, Hauptmann added, the man got in the car and sped off, colliding with one of the Explorers.
“He gunned it and just rammed the vehicle in front of him and just kept going,” Hauptmann said.
As officers pursued him, the suspect repeatedly collided with other vehicles, with the chase ending with one final crash into multiple vehicles, Hauptmann added. Although police said the suspect “became combative” as officers tried taking him into custody, he was subdued through the use of a Taser stun gun and arrested.
It was unclear when the man’s arraignment is scheduled. He is being held in the Burbank jail.
The woman did not need medical treatment and was taken home by officers afterward. The officer in the Explorer involved in the collision also did not need medical attention.
