SMFD Eligible to Provide Home Vaccinations

The San Marino Fire Department has been approved by the State of California as a site to administer COVID-19 vaccines, it was announced earlier this week.
All SMFD paramedic personnel have received mandated training in vaccine administration and the department has procured the equipment required for storage of the vaccine, according to Fire Chief Mario Rueda.
The SMFD has also applied to participate as a mobile vaccination resource when programs become available through the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (LACDPH).
“We were recently notified of the LACDPH’s new distribution program that they are referring to as ‘Mobile Vaccination for Homebound 65+ Population,’” said Rueda. “The LACDPH will be providing participating organizations with a list of homebound residents within each jurisdiction in the very near future.”
The objective, according to Rueda, is to provide COVID vaccinations for those who have been identified by the LACDPH as homebound, infirmed or elderly and cannot otherwise travel to acquire a vaccination. He said the SMFD already has compiled a “rough list” of more than 100 San Marino residents who currently meet that criteria, but expects the number to increase.
As a participating organization, the SMFD, along with Emergency Operations Center (EOC) staff, will be able to cross reference the list and reach out to senior citizens already known to the department in an effort to potentially add individuals eligible for the vaccine. Once they are identified, the SMFD and EOC will contact individuals and arrange a time for SMFD personnel to administer the vaccine at their homes.
“This has been a long time coming,” said Rueda. “The SMFD applied to the state early on to offer vaccines to residents but, unfortunately with the shortages, this did not come to fruition. This program for homebound seniors will provide vaccines to San Marino’s most vulnerable population and help to protect them.”
The number of doses allocated each week will be dependent on the eligible participants identified by the LACDPH, the fire department and EOC staff.
Rueda encouraged those who believe they may be eligible to receive a home vaccination or to verify an appointment to call San Marino’s Resident Support Hotline at (626) 300-0731.
