Tribute Bands Help Return To Normalcy at Starlight Bowl

Saturday’s Starlight Bowl audience spanned the generations, all who were thrilled to be out and having a good time.

This column limits me to a certain amount of words, both by the simple “real estate” of space on the page and my knowledge that you, dear reader, have a limit as to how much of your time you are willing to give me.

After spending last Saturday evening at the Starlight Bowl for the second time in this year’s series of summer concerts, I wondered just how, in the limited space I have, could I properly convey the sense of joy and excitement that permeated the amphitheater — by the audience, performers and even the staff who put on the shows.

It was an exuberance that was expressed in many ways, from people vocalizing how thrilled they were to see a return to normalcy and simply be out enjoying an evening of live music, to the way the crowd enthusiastically reacted, danced, and sang along with Queen tribute band Queen Nation. It was as if they had been locked away for over a year or something. Oh wait. Never mind.

We all know the old adage (attributed to everyone from Confucius to an early 20th-century advertising executive) that a picture is worth a thousand words. In acquiescence to that proverb, I thought it may be more effective to employ some brevity, keep my words to a minimum, and let the photos tell the tale of the evening’s vibe, and what you can expect if you take in a show or two at the bowl sometime between now and October.

However, before I put a lid on the written element of this column, remember that the tribute concerts wrap up on July 17 with DSB doing the music of Journey. That will be followed by a great slate of headliners including Blue Öyster Cult, Jefferson Starship, Alan Parsons, The Temptations, The Four Tops, Engelbert Humperdinck, Pat Benatar with Neil Giraldo and others.
