Local Girl Scouts Build Book Exchange Program

Girl Scouts Katie Walsh, Juliet Lord and Melody Huang of Troop 9321 designed and built a Little Free Library program — a community library box — in which a person can “leave a book; take a book.”
After a long delay due to the pandemic, the library is now open to the public at the playground in Lacy Park. Little Free Library is a nonprofit that strives to be a catalyst for building community and increasing book access through a global network of volunteer-led Little Free Library book exchanges.
Walsh and Lord are San Marino residents. They had the assistance of Walsh’s hard-of-hearing uncle, who is a handyman. He taught them to use various carpentry tools. The box is painted with characters from children’s literature.
To obtain permission to install the library at Lacy Park, the scouts made a presentation to San Marino City Council. They also presented the project to the Rotary Club. The club’s members supported the project by donating funds that helped cover the cost of materials for the library box.
The girl scouts encourage visitors to take a book and leave a book in the Little Free Library, located in the children’s play area.
