First published in the Sept. 23 print issue of the San Marino Tribune.

San Marino High School had another solid showing last weekend, this time at the Woodbridge Cross-Country Classic in Irvine, where the junior boys finished in first place, the senior boys ended up second and the junior varsity girls placed third. The freshman boys finished in 10th place to round out the meet.
Neil Chen placed third in the junior meet in a time of 16:43, followed closely by Benjamin Hughes, who was fifth in a time of 16:46. Thai Villaluna was just two seconds behind, finishing sixth in 16:48. Ryan To, Chase Nielson, Christopher Jang and Jack Ye rounded out the lineup for the winners.

San Marino’s entry in the senior boys’ race took the silver medal, paced by Gavin O’Malley (10th place, 17:32), Ethan Foong (14th place, 17:50) and Lucas Levy (44th place, 19:20). Jim Wang and Michael Yuratich finished 55th and 57th, respectively.
Head coach Angus Leung chose to place his top girls in the junior varsity competition to avoid a late night and long drive. The Lady Titans finished in third place, led by freshman Kayla Giddings, who won the race in 18:32. Senior Anya Tang was second in 18:42 and Katelyn Hansa finished in 16th place in a time of 21:51. Eve Rios and Janelle Heimerl rounded out the lineup.
San Marino’s freshman boys were also strong, with Essien Gagnon, Jeremy Karkafi, Jack Leizman, Sam Xia and Howard Chen hitting the finish line for the Titans. Taylor Tan competed solo in the sophomore race.
The San Marino cross-country team hosts the Rio Hondo League this afternoon at 3:30 p.m. for its first league competition of the year.
