San Marino Surprises Perennial Power Peninsula

First published in the Oct. 21 print issue of the San Marino Tribune.

The San Marino High School girls’ varsity tennis team prepped for tomorrow afternoon’s showdown with Rio Hondo League rival La Cañada by defeating Palos Verdes Peninsula High School last Wednesday by a final score of 10-8.
Sophomore Olivia Center and freshman Tianmei Wang each went 3-0 in singles play while the doubles team of senior Elaine Wu and junior Selena Wu also swept their three opponents.

All San Marino needed was another point, and the junior duo of Valerie Kuo and Katie Lui pulled out a 7-5 win over Kate Iwamoto and Sophie Wang to secure the victory over the Panthers, who at the time were ranked No. 2 in CIF Division 1.
While San Marino certainly has the inside track to a league title, all La Cañada has to do is beat the Titans by more than San Marino’s 11-7 margin of victory in the previous match between the two teams when the Spartans visit San Marino this afternoon at 3:30 p.m.
San Marino, which is seeking its 13th consecutive Rio Hondo League title, is now 7-1 overall and 6-0 in league play.
