Middle Schoolers Awarded for ‘Caring’

First published in the Nov. 18 print issue of the San Marino Tribune.

Mary Hazlett, Huntington Middle School’s assistant principal, called caring her favorite character trait.
“If you are just caring and considerate, I think that’s a really good start,” said Hazlett, who was in the HMS library Wednesday, Nov. 10, to distribute Good Citizenship awards at a special breakfast. Hazlett and Principal Daryl Topalian honor good citizens every month for character traits such as honesty, courtesy, responsibility and service.

Honorees, nominated by teachers and staff members, received a breakfast as well as a swag bag that includes an HMS T-shirt and a license plate frame that declares the recipient one of “Huntington’s Best.”
Morgan Shih is “friendly to all his classmates,” said Penny Roberts, one of his teachers.
Sally Stranger “works well with her peers and demonstrates kindness to all,” in the words of teacher Stephanie Moffat.
Adanna Azinge “always helps others enthusiastically,” said educator Beth Negrow. Azinge has already earned two Good Citizenship Awards this school year.
Jenna Estandarte is “a gem to have in class,” said Amiee Davignon, a teacher who nominated the 8th grader.
“This is one of my favorite times of the school year, presenting these awards,” said Topalian. “I feel it is crucial that we continue to recognize young people for displaying these important character traits.”
Other recipients who demonstrated caring include Morgan Herrera, Chloe Khalili, Raymond Li, Celeste Berlejung, Haruto Yamaba, Ethan Pham, Ashton Liu, Teddy Song, Peyton Herrera, Grace Davis, Sienna Rogers, Anna Mukherjee, Pepper Jung, Katherine Kohn, Ashley Kwok, Lily Li and Alex Kurbatov.
