Weight Room Dedicated to Memory of Matthew Ary

First published in the Dec. 2 print issue of the San Marino Tribune.

Matthew Ary’s death on Dec. 14, 2018, sent shock waves through the San Marino community. Just 19 years old at the time of his passing, Ary was remembered by his legion of admirers as a very caring, yet carefree, young man whom many described as a “Gentle Giant” given his prowess on the athletic fields of San Marino.
To commemorate Matthew’s legacy, the Ary family has remodeled the weight room at San Marino High School, where he graduated in 2017. Matthew is survived by his parents, Cynthia and Vincent Ary, brother Thomas and sister Mary Jane.

“Matthew’s passion was sports and, specifically, football,” the Ary family said in a statement. “The weight room at SMHS had special meaning to Matthew because he enjoyed lifting weights and hanging out with his teammates and friends.”
State-of-the-art equipment, weights, and other accessories have been installed through funds donated on Matthew’s behalf. The community is invited to an unveiling and dedication ceremony which will be held on Friday, Dec. 10, at 3:30 p.m. at Titan Stadium.
“Our sorrow over his loss is immense, but we know Matthew would be happy that the new weight room will continue to be used by future sports teams and students at SMHS,” the statement continued. “So many of you have supported us through these difficult times, and the project is finally completed.”
The community is invited and Cynthia Ary said that an RSVP is not necessary.
