Community Enjoys an ‘Out of the Park’ Home Run Derby

Following a two-year absence due to the pandemic, the popular Home Run Derby gloriously returned to San Marino National Little League on a picture-postcard Sunday, April 24.

The fields behind Huntington Middle School were packed with participants and loaded with activity as attendees enjoyed a chili-cook off, inflatables as well as contests to determine the fastest baserunner, fastest pitcher and, of course, chief home run hitters.

The Home Run Derby champions were Caroline Pagano and Roland Zeitlin in the Farm Division, Avery Chung and Joshua Newton in Minors, Jamie Chung and William Stenvick in Majors, Jeremiah Flores in Juniors, and Cathy Giddings and Ryan Park in the 15+ Division.

Fastest Pitcher competition honors went to Margo Lopez and Nichil Shiao in the Farm Division, Avery Chung and Gavin Morris in Minors, and William Stenvick in Majors.

Former Titan baseball player J.P. Paciorek won the chili cook-off and claimed it was the first time he had ever attempted to create the dish.

Fastest Base Runner awards were captured by Annabelle Stenvick and Nikhil Shiao in Farm Division, Caitlin Thomas and Joshua Newton in Minors, and William Stenvick in Majors.

On the philanthropic side, two San Marino High School baseball players – Caleb Newton and Jamie Bercaw – collected gently used baseball gear to benefit impoverished baseball teams in the United States and overseas. Donors included Phil and Mary Bruno, Daisy and Jon Wilson, Erin and Vince Clougherty, Francesca Gill, Anita Tang, San Marino High School softball Coach Scott Edmonds, SMHS baseball Coach John Franklin, Legends Baseball Academy, Coach Luke Ball, Kona Ice and Handel’s Ice Cream.

Chili cook-off top finishers were J.P. Paciorek (first place), Julianne Webb (second place) and Kathryn Prassas and Merissa Del Puerto (tied for third place). San Marino Mayor Susan Jakubowski, Fire Chief Mario Rueda and Police Chief John Incontro were chili cook-off judges..

The event was chaired by Sue Newton and Francesca Gill.
