San Marino High School’s speech and debate team competed last month at the 2022 national championships, which were held in Louisville, Kentucky.
The team broke a record for the number of entries to nationals, with 12 students advancing. Sophomore Sean Killackey made it to the quarterfinals in “Big Question Debate,” and placed in the top 16 in the country. Senior Elaina Lee placed in the top 60 in the nation in the original oratory category.
“We were incredibly proud of the team,” said coach Tony Ugalde. “We had several students advance to the out-rounds, which are the quarter finals, semifinals and finals.”
