SMHS Holds Grad Night Kickoff Party

The San Marino High School Grad Night 2023 Kickoff Party brought together parent and community supporters last month for a special celebratory evening at the home of Carrie and Scott Walker.

Guests convened under the stars amid Studio Ghibli-themed decorations, including glowing Kodama Tree Spirit live plant and moss centerpieces that were inspired by the “Princess Mononoke” film.

A savory spread of delectable bites from Alexander’s Catering complemented the carefully crafted evening, along with Yama Seafood’s culinary selection with a generous sushi donation.

Grad Night 2023 co-chairs Kathryn Oliveros, Debi Cribbs and Alice Song Ulrich spoke to the crowd about the collective efforts required to put on an event of such magnitude.

The community is invited to donate and volunteer their talents, time and resources for the upcoming grad night. Support is especially needed during painting and construction on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Wells Fargo Bank parking lot near the city’s center now through May.

Co-chair Alice Song Ulrich shared her enthusiasm about some of the anticipated creative elements related to the Studio Ghibli Japanese animation studio theme that was selected by the Class of 2023. Design renderings featuring elaborate painted backdrops were available for guests to preview.

The kickoff party, chaired by Grad Night committee members Danica Hughes and Carrie Walker, is part of a series of anticipatory events leading up to Grad Night, which immediately follows the Friday, May 26, graduation ceremony on the school’s campus.

Considered a magical and unforgettable night for the graduating senior class, this grand scale affair is funded primarily through the generosity of family and community patrons.
