City to Honor Fallen War Heroes on Memorial Day

Among the events put on by the city each year, perhaps none are as beloved and moving as the Memorial Day Service at the Lacy Park War Memorial. The city of San Marino Community Service Department invites one and all to join them for the service at 9 a.m. on Monday, May 29.
The annual service is a reflective moment for the community to pay tribute to all local war veterans and acknowledge San Marino residents who gave their lives defending the nation and its freedoms. The service consists of keynote speakers, patriotic music, and the reading of the 53 names included on the War Memorial, which honors residents who lost their lives in conflict.
“Memorial Day is one of the most poignant events in San Marino annually. Seeing the flags lowered to half-staff, the playing of taps, and hearing about the sacrifices many of our living veterans endured reminds one of just how fortunate we are to have people who are and were willing to put their lives on the line for our nation,” said Mayor Steve Talt, who will be one of the featured speakers at the service this year.
The most moving part of the service includes the opportunity for anyone to share their experience from their time in the service. While some talk about the branch and years they served, others are moved to open up about their experience.
In addition to the Memorial Day Service program, Lacy Park will also have the Hometown Heroes display back up, which features San Marino veterans and quotes about what their service meant to them.
The city also invites residents to consider a contribution to the Veterans Walk program. The Veterans Walk surrounds the back of the War Memorial and has etchings with the names of veterans who served from all services, from all conflicts, and in peacetime. For a tax-deductible donation of $300, you can recognize yourself, a friend, or a relative on the Veterans Walk.
This event is free and open to the public, for more information on this event or the Veterans Walk program, please contact the Recreation Division of Community Services at (626) 403-2200.
