Blooming Since 1923: San Gabriel Nursery & Florist Celebrates Centennial

It all began when Fred Yoshimura left Japan for California in 1917. He leased a small area of land to start Mission Nursery in 1923.
One year later, Yoshimura met and married Mitoko Naito. In 1942, the family was sent to Gila River Relocation Center and was forced to sell the nursery. In 1945, they were released and opened San Gabriel Nursery & Florist across the street from the original location.
From its humble beginnings, this family-owned nursery and florist business has made a long-lasting contribution to Japanese American culture and built a legacy of quality plant material and services.
“We are excited to be collaborating with CRFT by Maki to help us share and celebrate our centennial with the many customers and employees who helped us make it to this milestone,” said Mary Ishihara Swanton, a third-generation Japanese American co-owner. “We are thrilled with their illustrations that capture iconic pieces of our business and history.”
Presales for the “Blooming Since 1923” anniversary pack are now closed and pick-up will be on Saturday, June 17, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at San Gabriel Nursery & Florist as part of their community appreciation event.
