Swimming: San Marino Boys Sweep Relays in League Finals

High school swimmers in the Rio Hondo League all came together at La Cañada High on April 26 with hopes of being crowned champions.

In the Rio Hondo League Swimming Championships, the San Marino High boys’ swimming team won all three relay races and captured a handful of individual titles along the way, capping the day with a runner-up overall finish behind the host school La Cañada.

The Titans boys won the 200-yard freestyle relay, the 200 medley relay and the 400 freestyle relay. Meanwhile, San Marino senior Daniel Li won two league titles, and junior Henry Lyu and junior Otis Tsai each finished the competition as league champions.

In all, the San Marino boys’ swim team won seven league titles to finish second overall behind La Cañada, 484-454. The Titan girls, meanwhile, placed fourth overall with 251 points.

Li and Tsai teamed up with sophomore Liam Thomas and junior Mark O’Mara to win the 400 freestyle relay in 3 minutes, 8.18 seconds. Li, Tsai and Thomas also joined senior Harrison Summers in the 200 freestyle to win the crown in 1:27.16. Tsai, Lyu and Harrison Summers would also team up with freshman Ethan Yi to win the 200 yard medley relay in 1:36.51.

In the individual events, Li, a Stanford commit, won the 200 free in 1:38.23 and the 500 free in 4:30.57.

Tsai claimed the 100 backstroke title in 51:59 ahead of Summers, who claimed third in 56.72, and Yi, who was fourth in 57.45. Lyu, meanwhile, won the 100 breaststroke in 58.70.

Thomas came in third in the 200 free race in 1:40.08 and freshman Grant O’Mara finished right behind in fourth in 1:46.15. The sophomore also finished second in the 100 butterfly, clocking in 50.35 behind a first-place time of 48.77. Summers followed in fourth in 51.81 and sophomore Hughes Wang claimed fifth in 53.53.

Tsai also recorded a second-place finish in the 50 free behind Temple City junior Jayden Kadiman, who won the event in 21.45. The Titans junior clocked in 21.57 for second, while Yi finished third in 22.54.

Mark O’Mara finished runner-up in the 200 individual medley in 1:58.94 behind winner Ryan Makouar, a La Cañada senior who captured the league title in 1:52.71. The junior also finished third in the 500 in 4:42.83, beating out Grant O’Mara, who claimed fourth in 4:45.91.

San Marino junior Leah Dean led the girls in the league finals, finishing runner-up in the 100 backstroke in 1:01.95. Temple City junior Brianna Lee clocked in 1:00.65 to win the race.

Dean joined senior Kiana Li, freshman Sirui Gong and senior Maya Borkar for the 200 medley relay, finishing third in 1:56.07.

In the girls’ 200 free, Kiana Li, a Pomona College commit, finished third in 2:16.86, while Dean claimed fourth in 2:18.38.

Borkar also finished third in the 100 butterfly in 1:00.61.

The Titans boys’ and girls’ teams will be competing in the finals of the CIF Southern Section Swimming & Diving Championship at Mt. San Antonio College starting at noon on Saturday, May 4. San Marino will be in the Division I pool of schools at the finals.
