Track and Field: Aladefa, Kooper Capture League Titles

Champions were crowned at the Rio Hondo League track and field finals at South Pasadena High, and for San Marino High athletes, freshmen Isabella Aladefa and Keilani Kooper capped a competitive day for the Titans on April 26.

Along with the freshmen, senior Jayden Tse, junior Kayla Giddings and junior Leo Shyr finished runner-up in their events.

Aladefa won the 100-meter race in 12.49 seconds, six seconds ahead of runner-up South Pasadena sophomore Naya Holden.

The freshman also finished fourth in the 200, clocking in at 26.04. Aladefa joined junior Emelia Lin, freshman Claire Huang and senior Calista Tan in the 4×100 relay race, claiming fourth in 51.93.

Kooper was crowned league champion in the shot put for a throw of 33 feet, 3 ½ inches. Titans junior Nicole Bruning also participated in the event, finishing eighth with a throw of 21-8.

Back on the track, Giddings raced in two events and finished runner-up in the 800 behind champion Katelyn Matarese of La Cañada. Giddings clocked in at 2:20.77, nearly five seconds behind the winner. The junior also ran the 1,600 with a time of 5:19.68, good for fourth.

Huang, Lin and Tan also teamed up with junior Keidyn Liu in the 4×400 to finish third in 4:29.55. Huang, meanwhile, finished fifth individually in the 400 in 1:01.8. Titans junior Chloe Linden also qualified for the April 26 finals competing in the hurdle events. Linden placed seventh in both the 100 and 300 hurdles with a time of 19.65 and 53.12, respectively.

Tse and Shyr led the Titans boys in the league finals.

In the field events, Shyr came away with a runner-up finish in the long jump with a leap of 19-5 ½. San Marino sophomore Nicholas Chen placed seventh in the same event with a mark of 18-6 ½.

Tse also competed in the hurdle events, finishing runner-up in the 110 in 16.55 and fifth in the 300 in 43.37.

The Titans senior joined senior Kyle Lei, junior Essien Gagnon and senior Brandon Lee in the 4×100 relay, finishing third in 44.69. The 4×400 race featured Gagnon, Lei, sophomore Moritz Steinberger and junior Thomas Martin for a fifth-place finish in 3:35.47.

Individually, Lei finished third in the boys’ 100 and 200, clocking in at 11:29 and 23:03, respectively.

In the boys’ 400, Martin finished sixth in 52.90 and Steinberger placed seventh in 52.96.

Gagnon ran the 800 and clocked in at 2:02.30 to finish fourth, while freshman Alexander Mellis placed ninth in the 1,600 with a time of 4:55.40.

The CIF Southern Section Track and Field championships begin with the prelims held at four different school sites on May 4. The finals are set at Moorpark High on May 11.
