SMPD Provides Water Safety Tips, Urges Residents to Be Mindful

As summer temperatures rise, the San Marino Police Department has shared water safety tips with the community to help prevent drownings.

“Water competency is a way of improving water safety for yourself and others around you through avoiding common dangers, developing fundamental water safety skills to make you safer in and around the water, and knowing how to prevent and respond to drowning emergencies,” the SMPD said in a statement on social media.

The department suggests checking the water first if a child is missing. Police also urges to stay in arm’s reach of young children in the water, and to secure pools with appropriate barriers. SMPD also recommends residents to avoid alcohol consumption before swimming and to not swim alone.

In a drowning emergency, police advise:

1. Remove the person from the water.

2. Ask someone to call 911 for emergency medical services.

3. Begin rescue breathing and CPR.

4. Use an automated external defibrillator if available and transfer care to paramedics.
