Bernice Schumann

Bernice Schumann

Bernice E. Schumann, 92, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on July 25, 2022.

A kind woman with a strong faith in God, she was a loving and wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, cousin, and friend who is loved and will be missed.

Bernice was born on October 19, 1929. She grew up and attended school in Oakland, went to UC Berkeley, and worked for Trans World Airlines (TWA) in San Francisco.

She married James F. Schumann (Jim) in 1955.  With Jim’s career as a Naval Officer they lived and had children in different places.  Katie was born in San Diego, Steve in Hawaii, Don in Texas and Ken in New York.

In Monterey for the last 6 years of Jim’s naval career, Bernice was a Cub Scout Den Mother, Girl Scout Leader, PTA Mom, part of the Navy Officers Wives Club, was involved in Church, Little League and a member of the Naval Relief Society. Bernice had a great love for God, her family, and her country.

Retiring from the Navy in 1976, Bernice and Jim moved their family to San Marino, where Jim worked for Los Angeles County, as a Deputy Director of Parks and Recreation. A very talented and artistic Bernice enjoyed working on San Marino High School Grad Nights sets for each of their sons. She was a member at Trinity Lutheran Church and supported the Pasadena Boys & Girls Club. Bernice loved games, puzzles, music and singing, and was an avid reader.

After retiring from the County in 1987, Jim and Bernice shared their time between San Marino and Tahoe Donner. When Jim became the Tahoe-Donner community General Manager, they moved there full time to enjoy mountain life. Bernice and Jim loved the outdoors and traveling with notable trips to National Parks, Hawaii, England, Germany, Switzerland, Spain, Greece, Austria, and throughout our country.

Bernice was patient, gentle, gracious, kind, loving and a good listener. Her brown eyes could have a thoughtful twinkle, or a sparkle filled with tender, glowing love.  Her beautiful smile would light up a room and simply warm your heart.

She is survived by Jim, her husband of 66 years; daughter, Katie Pike; Sons, Steve, Don, and Ken; Son and Daughters-in-Law, Dennis Pike, Cora and Lori; grandchildren, Elise, Jackie, Kristen, Sandi, Jimmy, Eric, Greg, Tom, Maddy, Nate and Jennifer; and great-grandson, Carson. Those wishing to honor Bernice are asked to donate to Lutheran World Relief at www.lwr.org  and to spread love to all.  “There’s plenty of love to go around,” she used to say.

A memorial service will be held on August 27 at 11 a.m. at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Arcadia.
