The San Marino Garden Club recently held its February meeting at the Hill-Harbison House. The guest speaker was Richard Schulhof, CEO of the Los Angeles County Arboretum. Schulhof holds an undergraduate degree in landscape architecture from UC Berkeley and a master’s degree in public garden administration from University of Delaware and forestry from Harvard. He held horticultural internships at the Huntington Library and the Mildred Mathias Botany Garden at UCLA. Schulhof’s talking points included the importance of keeping rainwater where it falls by means of swales and gutters to allow percolation to aquifers below; the promotion of urban biodiversity and increased landscape resilience; the development of plants for use near homes in fire-prone areas; and the use of plants in determining air quality.
