Chinese School Hosts New Year’s Celebration

The Chinese School of San Marino recently celebrated the Lunar New Year by hosting a carnival — complete with talent shows, ethnic carnival games and authentic Chinese food — at Huntington Middle School. A wide array of performances was organized by parents, students, professionals and volunteers. They included an emperor-themed fashion show, Shaolin kung fu and Chinese yo-yo demonstrations, a folk dance performed by Valentine Elementary School students, and musical pieces that showcased the use of traditional instruments such as the ocarina and Chinese zither. City officials and employees, school board members and 600-plus students and parents attended, all to enjoy a taste of Asia The carnival took place under the leadership of 2018-19 Chinese School PTA President Sing Chung and Principal Shawn Chou. The event is the PTA’s only fundraiser; proceeds support after-school cultural enrichment classes, a teacher appreciation banquet and other fun PTA activities.
