San Marino High School’s instrumental music department recently celebrated the season with its annual Winter Concert at the school’s Neher Auditorium. The evening performers, led by music director Shota Horikawa, included the string orchestra, the concert band, the symphonic orchestra and the wind ensemble. Young musicians delighted the audience with a repertoire that included classical as well as innovative selections such as Dvorak’s “Quintet in G Op. 77,” Henry Mancini’s “It Had Better Be Tonight,” Stravinsky’s “Firebird Suite” and John Barnes Chance’s “Variations on a Korean Folk Song.” New this year, the low brass section entertained everyone with brief, creative performances in between ensembles. The spring concert is scheduled for Friday, March 29, at 7 p.m.
