San Marino Unified School District, The Huntington Collaborate on Humanities Class

By Stacy Lee

San Marino Unified School District and The Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens are collaborating on a unique pilot educational program.

“The Huntington is a tremendous resource in the community,” SMUSD Superintendent Dr. Alex Cherniss said. “We are looking to expand our offerings to students and broaden their experiences.”

“We’ve never had a year-long educational commitment with anyone before,” said Dr. Catherine Allgor, Nadine and Robert Skotheim Director of Education at The Huntington.

The Honors Humanities Seminar for San Marino High School seniors takes place at one of The Huntington’s classrooms on Mondays and in SMHS on Fridays. It then requires online learning from Tuesday through Thursday. The class has 17 students and is taught by Visual Arts Teacher Michelle Pauline and English Language Teacher Amanda Hernandez.

“We are nothing short of ecstatic to be teaching this course,” Pauline said. “We keep pinching ourselves, because it’s a dream for both of us to do cross curricular collaboration. Amanda and I are a true team – every writing assignment, lesson and art project is designed, presented and facilitated by both of us. We have been working the curriculum for a year now and have consciously integrated the Huntington Collections into each unit.”

She said high school Assistant Principal Doug Berry worked closely with them.
