Valentine Elementary School joined other schools in the San Marino School District on Tuesday as they were named a National Blue Ribbon School. Carver, Huntington and San Marino High School had previously received recognition. Valentine is being honored as an Exemplary High Performing School for being among the nation’s highest performing schools for 2015.

“We were excited and honored to be recognized” said Valentine Principal Colleen Shields stating it is the parents, students and staff who desire the recognition.

SMUSD Superintendent Dr. Alex Cherniss said it is quite an honor. It reflects the amazing work at Valentine in regards to teaching and learning, especially with the new Common Core standards, he said.

“It’s an achievement not only for Valentine, but for the school district,” he said.

U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan announced the National Blue Ribbon Schools Awards Tuesday morning. He stated, “This honor recognizes your students’ accomplishments and the hard work and dedication that went into their success. Your journey has taught you collaboration, intentional instruction, and strong relationships in school and with your community. You represent excellence – in vision, in implementation, and in results- and we want to learn as much as we can from you.”
