Girls,’ Boys’ and Jayvee Boys’ Teams Win Rio Hondo League Championships
April 28, 2016 will go down in the history books for San Marino High School’s swimming program. It will be remembered as the day the varsity boys and girls swim teams – along with the junior varsity boys – won the Rio Hondo League title.
The boys’ varsity won their dual meet against Temple City High School by a score of 126-44. The Titans won Rio Hondo League in 2014 and came close to the title last year. This season they have rounded up eight wins against one loss.
The girls’ varsity had not won a league title since 1991, making the occasion of their accomplishment all the more celebratory. The Lady Titans won the meet by a score of 97-72 and finish league play undefeated.
The boys’ junior varsity won the meet against the Rams by a score of 108-45. The jayvee boys’ team ended the season with seven wins and two losses overall and won the Rio Hondo league title as well.
The girls’ junior varsity team narrowly lost to Temple City by a score of 85-69, bringing their record to four wins and five losses.
Lady Titan swim Coach Mark Barr felt that all the teams had a great season this year.
“This is actually a really good year,” said Barr. “We have a lot of depth and we have a lot of versatile depth. This season as a whole has been great”
The Lady Titans dispatched La Cañada and South Pasadena during the 2016 campaign, two of the leading swim schools in the Rio Hondo League.
Girls varsity swimmer and San Marino High School freshman Zephy Koh broke the school record for the 100-meter backstroke event.
“I was really excited,” Zephy said. “I wasn’t expecting to break it freshman year.”
“I’m really happy about what we’ve done,” Koh added. “I think the team has had a great effort throughout and we haven’t given up at all and I’m really excited about how consistent we’ve been all season.”
