‘Raising the Barre’ Hopes to Raise the Roof

The San Marino High School Dance Dept. welcomes the community to its first performance of the year.

‘Raising the Barre,’ a night of storytelling through dance, comes to the Neher Auditorium stage for 3 shows on Thurs., Nov. 3 at 7 p.m. and Sat., Nov. 5 at 2 and 7 p.m.

“The idea was for each choreographer to create their own story or concept, find their music, then choreograph, teach and title the piece,” said Dance Director Bonnie Hanson. “Most of the music is without lyrics.”

This is a night of storytelling through dance.  Most of the music is without lyrics.

All members of SMHS Dance Company have contributed to the project with the chief choreographers being Danielle Drake, Alexis French, Serena Wang and Serena Cossu. All levels of the SMHS Dance program will be performing and Hanson has created the numbers for the beginning, intermediate and the intermediate/advanced levels. SMHS grad Shannon Dang choreographed for the advanced group.

The concert is less than an hour long, according to Hanson, and the numbers are primarily Modern, Contemporary and Jazz.

Tickets are $5 for general admission and $8 for reserved seating. Reservations can be made by emailing smhsdance@smusd.us.
