2017 Bookmark Design Contest Underway

The San Marino Public Library Foundation is marking the 10th year of offering its annual Bookmark Design Contest.

This contest, which runs from now until Dec. 15, has a theme this year of “Draw Your Favorite Place.”

“We cannot believe it’s actually been 10 years already,” said Cindy Chan, San Marino Public Library Foundation development director. “We’ve been very fortunate that every year kids have an interest in doing it and for the local support from businesses to be sponsors.”

The Bookmark Design Contest has become one of the library’s most anticipated events. Children start asking librarians about it during the summer, according to Chan.

This year’s prize is a $100 gift card, which will be awarded to two winners in the three age categories of: age 8 and under, 9-13 and 14-18. The winners will be notified on Jan. 7 and the winning bookmark designs will be unveiled during the library’s open house on Jan. 21.

The theme also changes every year. Chan said she gets ideas from the library foundation board and librarians on what to choose.

“We’re always trying to find something that’s a little different,” she said. “It doesn’t have to be library-specific. We want it to be visual. We try to find a theme that works if you’re 4 or 18.”

Entrants must have a Crowell Public Library card and submit original work that can be displayed publicly.  The design must be done on a 2.5-inch by 6.5-inch space on the entry form.

Forms can be picked up at the Crowell Public Library or downloaded from crowellpubliclibrary.org, and must be returned to the library’s reference desk.
