Chinese Club Awards Scholarships

The Chinese Club of San Marino recently offered a scholarship opportunity to San Marino High School students highlighting achievements in three categories: performance arts, athleticism and community service.
This year, the board approved an amount increase, bringing the amount from $500 to $1,000 for each category. The award recipients include Christopher Jang for excellence in performance arts, Valerie Kuo for excellence in athleticism and Mackenzie Anton for excellence in community service.
In the athleticism category, candidates represented various sports, from basketball to water polo to tennis and track and field. Through their sportsmanship and community work, these candidates learned skills such as leadership, overcoming struggles, developing a positive mindset, and serving the public.
In the community service category, candidates who applied used their experiences to help others. One candidate played music to help make people’s day better while volunteering at the hospital and learned the importance of paying it forward. Another is part of multiple organizations focusing on community service and helping needy people. Numerous candidates have started initiatives in their community to advocate for causes and make an impact.
In the performance arts category, candidates used music and art to express self-image and self-expression to mentor and coach others.
All candidates were excellent in their respective categories. The selection panel consisted of five members from the Chinese Club’s Board of Directors, and they had the challenging task of choosing a standout in each category. In the athleticism category, it took three rounds of scoring before they ultimately decided on a winner. One panelist said, “The winners are outstanding, but their stories touched my heart.”
