William G. Ericson Photography Competition and Scholarship Program Open to High School Seniors

The William G. Ericson Foundation, in partnership with the Pasadena City College Foundation, sponsors photographic art competitions at PCC and public high schools in the Pasadena Area Community College District to provide awards to meritorious participants.

The awards are in the form of scholarships for the study of photographic art. Class of 2024 high school seniors are eligible to participate in the 2024 competition. Applications will close April 1. Awardees will be celebrated on Saturday, May 18, at the PCC campus.

Eligible PACCD public high schools are Arcadia, Arroyo, Blair, Gabrielino, John Muir, La Cañada, Marshall Fundamental, Pasadena, Rosemead, San Marino, South Pasadena and Temple City.

In 2023, the inaugural pilot program was open to PCC students, with 60 finalists selected for the exhibition in the Boone Family Gallery on the PCC campus. More than $20,000 in scholarships was awarded to the winners.

A publisher who owned the South Pasadena Review (1947-2012), a weekly community newspaper, and The Quarterly Magazine (1978-2012), an upscale lifestyle magazine in the San Gabriel Valley, Ericson considered himself first and foremost a photographer. In 2022, the William G. Ericson Foundation partnered with the PCC Foundation to promote the advancement of photography studies through the compilation, publication and distribution of Ericson’s collected works, “William Ericson Photography — A Retrospective,” to libraries and schools.

Additionally, the William G. Ericson Photography Competition and Scholarship Program was established, generating photographic art competitions and scholarship awards among students at PCC and local high schools.
