San Marino High Grad Wins Rotary Scholarship to Study in London

San Marino High graduate Ethan Wang is heading to London.

Wang, who graduated in 2020, received a Global Grant Scholarship for graduate study in population health at the Institute of Epidemiology and Health Care at University College London beginning in September, Rotary International has announced.

His interests align with the Rotary Club’s disease prevention and treatment area of focus. The scholarship is worth $33,400.

At University College London, Wang plans to study ways to evaluate, develop and lead research-based health initiatives in the field at the intersection of health and technology.

During high school, Wang was a cabinet member of the Rotary Interact Club and volunteered with the organization in San Marino’s Fourth of July Parade, later being awarded the Barth Rotary Scholarship of $2,500 as a high school graduate.

He graduated from Johns Hopkins University in 2023 as a Woodrow Wilson Fellow after only seven semesters, with a double major in public health studies and natural sciences area. While in Baltimore, he was involved with several organizations including TechUp USA, Baltimore CONNECT, Cochlear Center for Hearing and Public Health, and Code in the Schools.

His host is the Kingsbury & Kenton Rotary Club, in District 1130. Wang plans to speak at club meetings, attend the district conference and be a resource to Rotarians and their programs while abroad.

Upon his return, Wang will be the keynote speaker at the Rotary’s annual Foundation Luncheon at The Huntington in March, giving a recount of his academic and social activities while abroad.

The Rotary Club of San Marino is Wang’s sponsor, having now had 31 of its nominees for the Global Grant Scholarship accepted by Rotary International. He found out about the scholarship through an article in this newspaper about previous Global Grant scholar, Mark Liang, a fellow Titan classmate who received his master’s from Cambridge.

Each year, the San Marino Rotary Club seeks to identify a Global Grant applicant, one who desires to further their education abroad for a master’s or doctorate degree, and whose coursework and extracurricular activities align with one or more of Rotary’s areas of focus: peace and conflict prevention/resolution; disease prevention and treatment; water and sanitation; maternal and child health; basic education and literacy; economic and community development and/or environment.

Applicants are interviewed on the club and district level, in person if possible, but by Zoom or Skype if necessary.
