Police Department Offers Home Security Tips

The San Marino Police Department is asking residents to not neglect their home security by being proactive and safeguarding their property.

To help prevent residential burglaries, the SMPD shared these tips with the homeowners:

• Illuminate surroundings. Consider motion-activated lighting.

• Install a home security system and always set the alarm when leaving the property.

• Lock all points of entry, including doors, windows and the garage.

• Remove climbing aids from outdoor access. Do not leave chairs or ladders alongside property.

• Be cautious while using social media. Don’t advertise when planning to go out of town.

• Trust instincts. If you see something, say something.

• Know the patterns of intrusion: Burglars like to hide at the rear of a residence, getaway drivers typically remain in their vehicle, looking for residents who are leaving home.

• The timeframe for burglaries is usually between 5-10 p.m.

“With your help, we can create safer, more diligent neighborhoods,” the SMPD said in a statement.
