Trio of San Marino Seniors Awarded Scholarships

The Chinese Club of San Marino, established in 1979 as a nonprofit organization, fosters cultural exchange, educational development, community service and a spirit of inclusivity. Each year, the club awards $1,000 scholarships to exceptional San Marino High School upperclassmen in three categories: athletics, community service and performance arts.  For 2024, the club chose three remarkable seniors for their outstanding achievements.

Kaitlyn An, a dedicated athlete and leader, excels on the field and on the mat. As a senior defender for the SMHS girls’ varsity soccer team, An demonstrates superb teamwork and leadership. Achieving Hapkido black belt status at the age of 12, An took initiative in her freshman year by becoming the vice president of San Marino’s self-defense and fitness club. An’s involvement in athletics has taught her the discipline and perseverance needed to be successful.

Melody Chen, a champion for social justice, has dedicated her time to serving the community. A member of the Interact Club since middle school, Chen is passionate about addressing health care disparities. Inspired by her volunteer experiences, she plans to pursue a career as a primary physician and establish a sliding-scale clinic to make health care accessible to all. Chen’s dedication to improving the lives of others is truly commendable.

Aubrey Wendling, a gifted vocalist, has enriched our community with her musical talent. For the last three years, Wendling has been a cherished member of the San Marino Honors Chamber Choir. Her dedication to music and her ability to collaborate with others have contributed to the choir’s success. Wendling’s passion for the performing arts is an inspiration to aspiring musicians.

The Chinese Club of San Marino congratulates SMHS Titans An, Chen and Wendling on their well-deserved scholarships. Their accomplishments and commitment to excellence are a testament to the well-rounded talents of San Marino’s youth.
