Anne Marie Melrose
Anne Marie Melrose passed peacefully into the presence of the Lord on Oct. 28, 2021. The daughter and granddaughter of Presbyterian missionaries, she was born on the mission field of Hainan Island, China to her parents Paul and Esther Melrose on Sept. 18, 1923. Marie, as she was known, spent the early part of her life on the island with her brothers and sisters, Jack, Hugh, Jean and Sylvia. As they got older, they were sent home to their grandmother in Los Angeles to attend school. After graduating from UCLA, Marie went to Princeton Seminary and earned a master’s in Religious Education. She served as Director of Christian Education at three churches before entering service in 1956 as a PC(USA) missionary to Taegu and Seoul, Korea, where she taught at Seoul Foreign School and then Presbyterian College & Theological Seminary until 1988. In retirement, Marie continued to serve in China, Vanuatu, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Brazil, Colombia and Kenya by teaching English and Christian Education. In 1998, she settled in Monte Vista Grove Homes in Pasadena, Calif., and was active in the San Marino Community Church. Marie was preceded in death by her parents, siblings, and a great-nephew, Peter Melrose. She leaves her family and many friends a legacy of dedicated faith and commitment to service with grace and love.
