Dennis Kneier Answers Critics; Says He ‘Changed Mind’ On Council Run

By Mitch Lehman

Two-term San Marino City Councilman Dennis Kneier, when informed of a video clip from four years ago in which he tells a reporter he will not seek re-election in November, 2015, told The Tribune he will proceed with the campaign he announced last week in the pages of this newspaper.

“As a general rule, it is difficult for people in public life to change their mind,” Kneier said from New York City, where he and his wife are visiting family. “In my case, I am not afraid to say that my position has evolved as my experiences have broadened, deepened and become more personal. It has been a solemn and thoughtful process as I strived to do the best for San Marino.”

Kneier survived a recall effort last fall that was launched after he was seen on videotape tossing a bag of dog waste onto a neighbor’s side yard while walking home from Lacy Park. Kneier and the neighbor, Philip Lao, had previously sparred over several issues  including, most ironically, Kneier’s opposition to a sign on Lao’s yard that said ‘No Poop Zone’ that urged passers-by to curb their pets.
