San Marino residents took a big step forward on Sunday, June 28 as they volunteered their time to learn how to create and maintain an effective neighborhood watch program.

Representatives from the police department, fire department and American Red Cross each spoke on the roles and responsibilities of a block captain, the person who serves as a liaison between the police department and the neighborhood.

Corporal Brian Wong said the neighborhood watch program has been dormant in some parts of the city and they are looking for block captains who are motivated to keep it going.

“We need to reinvigorate this program,” said Jerry Hawk, American Red Cross ambassador.

Corporal William Chan said, “We need your help… it takes a team effort to solve these crimes.”

If a person is a victim of a crime, he said the best advice he can give is to not touch anything at the crime scene and to call the police immediately. Document everything of value in the house by writing down serial numbers and taking photos.
