San Marino City Council, School District Provide Updates

By Krista Daly

The San Marino Unified School District and San Marino City Council updated each other on various projects and issues currently going on during a joint meeting Tuesday, July 14. This includes enrollment numbers at the school, progress with the Huntington Middle School gym, efforts of water measures being voted on during this year’s election.

Enrollment at the school district is up from last year, said Dr. Alex Cherniss, district superintendent. Projected enrollment is at 3,106 for the school year, while last year was only 3,014.

Cherniss said they are at an “ideal” size right now. They want to keep class sizes low, but at the same time, they have to keep in mind that the district gets funded per student.

There is a new transitional kindergarten class at Valentine Elementary this year as well, which helps with enrollment numbers.
