Bellwood Project Gets New Height Approved

By Krista Daly

Ban Tieu, the owner of 1565 Bellwood Road in San Marino, was back before the city’s Design Review Committee on Wednesday, Aug. 5 with a revised proposal for his house. Construction for the home was underway when significant issues with the plans arose.

His new proposal was approved with a height of 16 feet 5 inches and a plate height of 8 feet 6 inches. Since the house is already framed, this means the architect has to remove the roof and tear up a portion of what is already built.

Confusion over the approved height occurred as discrepancies in scale vs. stated height were discovered after construction had already begun. The scaled height was nearly 17 feet 5 inches, while the height listed on the cover page was 16 feet. Either height was not tall enough as the constructed home with a plate height of 10 feet extended both limits at about 17 feet 10 inches and had to go before the DRC with a modified height plan.
