San Marino Planning Commission Defends Character of Open Neighborhood

By Krista Daly

In an attempt to preserve the integrity of the intersection at West Drive and Lorain Road, the San Marino Planning Commission denied the proposal for 1886 West Drive to continue the construction of an existing wall 38 feet to the west with it returning northwards and ending at the home.

The hope of the homeowner was to provide additional privacy for the kitchen eating area and rear yard as well as creating a secure play area for the children away from the pool, said Tom Ferguson, a representative of the owner.

Commissioner Susan Jakubowski described the wall extension as “fortress-like” stating it would enclose the home while the other corner homes in the intersection are more open. The commissioners did not believe it was compatible, especially since it seemed as though the owner was trying to increase the backyard into the side yard, noted Commissioner Raymond Cheng.
