The professor of criminal law walked into the classroom, dumped a stack of papers on the lecturn, turned to his students and spoke 14 words that changed Eric Bergmann’s life forever.

“It’s obvious to me that many of you are not going to be attorneys.”

That declaration was made after grading the first written brief of the year, and surprisingly, it was music to the ears of San Marino High School’s newest assistant principal of activities.

“It was one of those moments when the cosmic tumblers all fall into place,” Bergmann says, smiling. “It was a relief. A moment of clarity.”

A few days later, Bergmann was driving back to his home in Salt Lake City when it hit him.

“I couldn’t get it out of my mind,” said Bergmann. “I just kept saying to myself ‘how do I become a teacher.’ I called up a buddy of mine who was a teacher and said ‘what do I do?’”
