While Principal Liz Hollingsworth may oversee Carver Elementary on a regular basis, it was first-grader Derrick Lin’s day to rule the school on Friday, Oct. 2. Derrick, who was guided by Hollingsworth, took on the role at Principal for the Day.
“Derrick is in charge of the school,” Hollingsworth said Friday morning. “He’s already decided that students will get an extra five minutes of recess. We’re going to visit the classrooms. He’s doing yard duties. We’re going to have coffee with the teachers.”
“I’m going to visit the first grade classrooms and kindergarten,” Derrick said.
He said he thinks his decision to give his fellow classmates an extra five minutes of recess will make them happy.
Derrick said he enjoys physical education class especially when they play Flag Tag because, he explains, “Nobody gets me and I get everybody.” He said the students also would also enjoy more PE time.
