In early June of previous years, senior Titans have made their way onto the Titan Stadium field on what many regard as the most important day of a high school student’s career: graduation.

As students marched to their seats on the field, single-file, female students were adorned in white robes while male students were dressed in blue – with corresponding cap color.

This year however, there is a change in this color assignment. All graduating Titans alike will be sporting blue caps and gowns on their graduation day.

The reason for this change is one of consideration for all students.

“Two years in a row I have received comments stating that it is a little insensitive to have the girls wear one color robe and the boys another, because not everyone identifies with their birth gender,” said Principal Mrs. Johnson.

This issue of comfort and robes is relevant not only in San Marino but also throughout the nation. Out of respect for all students, three high schools in Maryland used a single color for graduation robes in June, 2015 to ensure gender neutrality.

According to Fox News, “At least five other schools in Washington, D.C. have decided to make the change next year.”
