Titans Take Charge of CIF Championship

For the first time in his five years as San Marino High School’s head coach, Mike Hobbie looked completely befuddled on a football field. With both hands, he smoothed back his hair, soaking wet thanks to the full contents of a water jug dispensed over his head by his exalting players. Alone in a growing crowd, he aimlessly ambled across the field with nowhere to go.

Seemingly out of nowhere, his wife Suzanne arrived, placed her arms around his neck and smacked him with a huge kiss. The public display of affection seemed to do the trick, as the coach seemed to become instantly aware of the wild celebration that was taking place on the floor of Citrus College Stadium, where Hobbie’s Titans had just won the CIF Central Division championship – the school’s first since 1988 – by defeating Charter Oak.

“I don’t even know what happened,” exclaimed Titan wide receiver J.P. Shohfi, who caught 12 passes for 282 yards and two touchdowns, his body shrouded by steam on the December night. “I don’t remember a thing. All I know is we just won the CIF championship.”

Few will forget Shohfi, or his battery mate, quarterback Carson Glazier, who 24 hours later were informed at the team banquet that their numbers were retired in honor of their career achievements.
