Sgt. Oliver Campbell Relocated to Ft. Pierce

San Marino resident Sgt. Oliver Campbell returned to Ft. Pierce in Washington state on Feb. 2, where he will continue his rehabilitation, according to Carol Campbell, Oliver’s mother. Sgt. Campbell underwent surgery in Afghanistan after he was shot four times on Sunday, Jan. 22 by Taliban forces. He suffered a massive chest wound, injuries to his diaphragm and took shrapnel near his eyes. Sgt. Campbell was later awarded the Purple Heart, which was presented to him along with one of the bullets that was removed from his body.

“It is amazing how he survived,” Carol Campbell told The Tribune. “One bullet was a centimeter from his heart. I had a feeling of dread about a month ago and called many to pray. I think the angels saved him.”

Sgt. Campbell has been traveling with Sgt. Ryan Hastings, who was injured in the same attack.

Before his transfer to Ft. Pierce, Sgt. Campbell spent several days at Walter Reed National Military Medical center, where he received a visit from former President George H.W. Bush and his wife, Barbara.
