San Marino’s unofficial slogan proffered by the late, former Mayor Paul Crowley – ‘A City 50 Years Behind the Times, And Fighting Hard to Stay That Way’ – might have just been confirmed by a neutral, third party.
Like it or not, San Marino was recently named the 2nd Most Boring Small Town In America, just behind Hillsborough, CA and six spots “ahead” of La Cañada Flintridge.
So says HomeSnacks and AreaVibes, two companies in the growing field of “infotainment.”
The conclusion was arrived at by combining data such as percentage of population over age 35, percentage of married households, median age, percentage of households with children, percentage of households with residents over the age of 65 and population density.
“This list was full of wealthy, quiet small towns, and it sounds to me like San Marino fits the bill,” said Nick James of HomeSnacks, which is based in North Carolina.
San Marino’s ranking is drawn from the 4,000 communities nationwide having a population between 5,000 and 50,000 residents. James said that their research looks only at the human element, not “things to do.”
“If we simply looked at amenities, we’d have thousands of cities with zero amenities and there would be no way to break the tie,” he quipped.
“That’s fine with me,” said Mayor Allan Yung when told of San Marino’s status. “It makes my job easier.”
Yung said the city is currently evaluating every single aspect of operation causing him to attend “tons of meetings.”
“If boring means being safe and peaceful, that’s the best thing San Marino can have,” Yung said.
James said that a previous campaign ranking the most boring cities in each state drew a huge response.
“But not what you might think,” James said. “People wanted to know how they could qualify to be more boring.”
