South Pasadena had enough entries, but San Marino had the thoroughbreds on Thursday evening as the Titans controlled the lower weights to defeat the Tigers in the Rio Hondo League wrestling opener for both teams by a final score of 48-21.
Sean Han (120lbs.), Koa Ruiz (138lbs.), Devin Che (145lbs.), and Luka Wick collected pins in their weight classes to give the Titans enough cushion for the remainder of the match. Craig McLaren Swan defeated his opponent at 132lbs. for another six points while Santino Sanchez (113lbs.), Raul Jimenez (126lbs.) and Ryan Arrington (195lbs.) were all unopposed, collecting six more points apiece for the hosts. San Marino’s Gavin Palenik battled South Pasadena’s Devin Peries at 160lbs., but the Tiger eventually took the decision. And in the most entertaining match of the evening, San Marino’s Matt Harlan was eventually stopped in the 220lb. weight class by South Pasadena’s Isaiah Cooper in a thrilling finale.
San Marino’s Cassie Arrington fought hard in girls’ 138lb. action but was defeated by South Pasadena’s Roxanne Lynch, while David Feffer pinned his opponent in 146lb. junior varsity action. Fan favorite Will Graham battled for three periods at 152lbs. before he dropped a decision to Sandro Salas of South Pasadena.
The Titans host Monrovia at 4:30 p.m. on Monday, January 13.
