It was a challenging dual meet season for San Marino High School’s wrestling team, but the Titans exacted a measure of revenge at last Wednesday’s Rio Hondo League finals.
Four girls and six boys won their weight classes during the event at Monrovia High School: Tilly Garcia (111 pounds), Cassie Arrington (143), Allyson Arrington (137) and Hannah Collazo (191) claimed girls’ titles, while Romero Sanchez (106 pounds), Sean Han (113), Koa Ruiz (120), Devyn Che (126), Luka Wick (145) and Ryan Arrington (182) captured titles in boys’ classes.
Senior Matt Harlan finished second in the boys’ 220-pound class, and Raul Harlan was third at 119 pounds. Lily Asghari was runner-up in the girls’ 170-pound division.
The CIF Southern Section boys’ preliminaries will be held Friday, Feb. 14, at Brea-Olinda High School, and the girls will travel to Camarillo High School.
Wick, a junior, is the defending section champion at 145 pounds and finished fifth in the state. He was basically unchallenged at the Rio Hondo finals, pinning his way through the weight class for his family’s 11th title. His older brothers Zander and Evan — 2016 graduates of SMHS — won four league titles apiece before heading to the University of Wisconsin on wrestling scholarships. Luka Wick is being recruited by “any school that has a wrestling team,” according to a coach.
The Lady Titans were well represented at the Esperanza Tournament at the end of January, as Arrington made it to the finals before bowing out while Garcia finished second.
Though it is her first year in the sport, Collazo finished fourth in her weight class.
