
Junior centerfielder Charis Chung picked up a hit against Arroyo and played excellent defense.


The weather cooperated but the opponent didn’t, as visiting Arroyo High School defeated San Marino, 12-4, in a season opener Saturday morning in the San Marino Invitational Tournament.
Arroyo scored five runs in the third inning to take the lead, and the Titans couldn’t recover despite outhitting the Knights, nine to seven.
Starting pitcher Morgan Woodward and catcher Macy Mooney each had two hits for San Marino, with Mooney clearing the center field fence in the third inning for a home run. Kinu Takasugi, Charis Chung, Kate Brunner, Bella Escobar and Elissa Beck each added hits and Beck matched Mooney with two runs batted in.
Beck and Justene Huang also pitched in relief for the Titans.
In San Marino’s second game of the tournament, Schurr High School scored two runs in the top of the fifth inning to break a 2-2 tie and claim a 4-2 win. Sophomore Claire Streeter pitched six innings for the Titans, striking out 11 while surrendering five hits. Huang, Escobar, Mooney, Beck and Takasugi each picked up a hit for the Titans, who dropped to 0-2 on the young season.
Escobar had two RBIs for San Marino, which continues tournament play on Friday, Feb. 21 and Sat., Feb. 22, at SMHS. La Salle High School visits SMHS on Tuesday, Feb. 25, for a 3:30 p.m. nonleague contest.
