Methodist Hospital of Southern California and the American Red Cross will host four blood drives on the hospital campus during the coming weeks in an effort to relieve a local shortage.
The entire nation also is facing a severe blood shortage, as the coronavirus outbreak has reduced donations at a time when demand remains strong. Nearly 2,700 Red Cross blood drives have been canceled across the country because of concerns about COVID-19, resulting in 86,000 fewer blood donations compared with last year’s pace.
Blood drives will be held at Methodist Hospital’s Lewis Hall at 300 W. Huntington Drive in Arcadia Tuesday, April 7; Tuesday, April 28 and Wednesday, May 27, from 8 a.m.-7 p.m. To sign up, contact Darlene Burge at (626) 574-3582.
The donation site will use social distancing to further reduce spread of the virus. Donors must present a valid ID.
Nationwide, someone needs a unit of blood every two to three seconds and most of us will need blood in our lifetime. The need for blood is constant and only volunteer donors can meet that need.
