Fire Chief Touts ‘Water Watcher’ Program

As warmer weather arrives, more families may enjoy spending time by the pool. San Marino Fire Chief Mario Rueda encourages residents to follow these safety tips, which he said “should be practiced any time individuals gather poolside.”
• Never take your eyes off a child who is near or in a swimming pool; children can “drown without a sound,” safety advocates have said.
• Don’t rely on fences or barriers and inflatable devices for safety in a swimming pool.
• Even if your child has had swimming lessons, he or she is still at risk for drowning; nothing substitutes for adult supervision.
• Learn CPR — you never know when you might need this life-saving skill.
The San Marino Fire Department encourages all city residents to practice water and pool safety this summer and has developed the Water Watcher program to help instruct families on water safety. As part of the program, members of the department will provide instruction and information on the Water Watcher effort. The program will distribute a badge and lanyard for the responsible adult, as well as a whistle to alert others in the event of an emergency.
More information on the Water Watcher program is available on the city website at cityofsanmarino.org.
Residents can schedule Water Watcher appointments at no cost by contacting the Fire Department at (626) 300-0735 or emailing fire@cityofsanmarino.org.
