San Marino Shows Depth at League Finals

The Titan boys had a similar result, finishing 5-0 in dual meets against Rio Hondo League opponents but finishing behind the Spartans at the league finals meet.
Topping the list of accomplishments was the SMHS girls’ 400-yard freestyle relay team of Sophia Yao, Sabrina Wang, Blake Pak and Dora Chang, which edged La Cañada for the title. The quartet set a new school and league record in the event, finishing in 3 minutes 34.16 seconds.
San Marino had a wide array of swimmers score points, which proved to be the key to the fine finish. Junior Yao won the girls’ 100-yard freestyle, edging Wang by less than half a second. Chang was fourth.
Kiana Li won the 100-yard breaststroke with teammate and fellow freshman Sarah Tang placing sixth.
Wang and Chang recorded a 1-2 finish in the 200-yard individual medley. Freshman Piper Summers finished fifth in the event. The girls’ 200-yard freestyle relay team of Wang, Li, Paul and Maya Borkar won the Rio Hondo title in 1:45:22, more than three seconds ahead of their nearest opponent.
San Marino also claimed the 200-yard medley relay with Chang, Li, Paul and Yao recording a winning time of 1:53 flat. Senior Pak took second in the girls’ 100-yard backstroke.
Junior Yao was second in the 100-yard butterfly, one spot ahead of sophomore Paul. Pak checked in at sixth in the event. Freshman Li finished third in the 500-yard freestyle with classmate Borkar placing fifth. Paul finished third in the girls’ 200 free with Siouxsie Lennox placing sixth, and freshman Madeleine Aguilar took seventh in the 500 free to round out the scoring.
“All things considered, I think we ended up with a very good season,” said Barr. “I am especially proud of the 400-yard relay team for setting the school and league records. They worked very hard.”
At the subsequent CIF meet, the Titans’ 400-yard freestyle relay team of Yao, Wang, Pak and Chang broke the record that ended up lasting for less than a week, finishing third in Division 2 with a time of 3:33.77.
