Jeanne Howlett Schmid

Always stunning, Jeanne modeled from an early age in print, on runways and later, as a Bullock’s “tea room” model. Her beauty and grace were enhanced by her heart and laughter. Known for her expert hospitality and her genuine love for her family, communities of San Marino and Balboa Island, longtime friends and philanthropies, Jeanne was always ready for a party. The Balboa Dutch door was always open for her children’s friends’ visits; the player piano playing, the food and drink endlessly and effortlessly available. Jeanne’s heartfelt welcome crossed all generations.
She took exceptional joy in attending sporting and school activities of her 3 children: Nancy (Rob), Peggy and John; her 6 grandchildren: Rob3, Kara, Lindsey, Hayley, Linden and Rylen, and felt a special thrill entertaining and being entertained by her 6 great-grandchildren: Wyatt, Nora, Hayden, Keegan, Bennett and Harper.
Jeanne was a tirelessly joyful volunteer for San Marino Schools, serving as room mother for 12 years, chairing Grad Night Committees, Carvel Carnivals, and on PTA boards for 30 years! She loved volunteering for Huntington Memorial Hospital, especially the mothers-and-fathers-to-be tours and dinners, and chairing the Auxiliary Guild luncheon events and elegant galas. Upon Ben’s retirement and their move to Balboa Island, Jeanne volunteered at Sherman Gardens, the Orange County Performing Arts Center and as President of the Camelot Chapter of the Orange County Philharmonic Society.
Always supportive of Ben’s professional, philanthropic and personal interests, Jeanne was the “woman behind the man” for San Marino Rotary Club, San Marino City Club and Southern California Engineers Association Presidential events. She even learned to enjoy golf, especially when it involved travel to the world’s greatest courses (with exquisite accommodations and the most charming caddies) with the Orange County Seniors. Together, Jeanne and Ben were honored with formal commendations from the City of San Marino, San Marino Rotary Club and the U.S. Senate for “their exemplary record of service.”
Balboa was Jeanne’s “home away from home,” with summers on the bay with the multi-generational Pearl Street gang, but her heart’s delight was the “aloha” spirit of Hawaii, particularly Maui. And she shared that gift with her family on regular visits, full of memories that will last a lifetime.
An exceptional life; a charming, vivacious personality; an ageless beauty; a lover of people and parties, Jeanne brought joy and delight to every gathering. The beautiful fragrance of her presence will linger in our hearts forever. Thank you, Nana, for the great gift of your love.
The family has planned a private, blended “ocean” farewell for Jeanne and Ben on their treasured spot in Maui. There will be “open house” celebrations in Pasadena and Balboa in the near future. On behalf of Jeanne, a special “thank you” for making her life so lovely with your friendship.
